  • At least every 21½ hours, an American or Canadian firefighter dies from occupational cancer.

  • About 40% of all firefighters working today will be diagnosed with cancer during their careers.

  • A firefighter’s child is 27-times more likely to be get cancer than a child of a non-firefighter.

  • In 2023, 72% of IAFF member line-of-duty deaths were due to occupational cancer.

  • In Canada, close to 94% of line-of-duty deaths among professional fire fighters are the result of occupational cancers.

  • Early detection of cancer greatly increases the chances for successful treatment and survival.
